LANDSCAPE & SIGNAGE
Augusta, Italy, 2009

Principals: Andrea Di Stefano, Aleksandra Jaeschke | Design team: Paolo Tringali | Engineering: Antonio Di Caro

In Gear is a small landscape intervention in the industrial area of Siracusa. It indicates access to a local transport company and simultaneously redefines the road junction design.
Two interlocking arrays of horizontally distributed, prefabricated concrete curbs define the junction. While the first delimits the road, the second gradually rises to form the support for the company signage. The system absorbs the parameters imposed by the traffic code and at the same time responds to the local dynamics providing vertical signage support in the area of enhanced visibility. The interlocking curbs act like gear wheels, virtually channelling the movement towards the company headquarters.
